Born just outside Saintfield in 1694, Francis Hutcheson became one of the Enlightenment’s most influential philosophers. His ideas about liberty, equality, natural rights and the role of government profoundly influenced the thinking of America’s Founding Fathers, including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and others involved in drafting the Declaration of Independence.
This fascinating series of four free talks brings together respected historians, authors and broadcasters to explore the world in which Hutcheson lived, the America his ideas helped shape and why those ideas remain relevant today.

Former BBC Northern Ireland Political Editor Mark Devenport explores the enduring importance of liberal democracy and the principles that underpin it. Drawing on his extensive experience reporting on politics at the highest level in Northern Ireland, Westminster and the USA, Mark will consider why democratic values remain vital today and why the ideas of Francis Hutcheson, born near Saintfield over 300 years ago, continue to influence political thinking around the world.

Historian Ken Dawson paints a vivid picture of everyday life, society, religion and politics in the community where Francis Hutcheson grew up and where many emigrants began their journey to America. What was life really like in County Down during the eighteenth century? What sort of society shaped the young Francis Hutcheson, and what encouraged so many local people to cross the Atlantic in search of new opportunities?
Ken will paint a vivid picture of life in eighteenth-century County Down, exploring its towns and villages, farming communities, religious traditions, education, commerce and everyday family life. His talk provides valuable insight into the social and cultural environment from which Francis Hutcheson emerged and helps explain the strong connections that developed between Ulster and colonial America.
